May 2024: What's on London with kids

The anniversary edit: 20 family-friendly things to do in London this month, 10 activities for Under 5s and last minute weekend happenings.

Here comes May, the month where all things seem possible. There’s flowers, fetes, fairs and fun a-plenty plus extra family time to enjoy them with, thanks to two bank holidays (and another half term!)

In this newsletter I bring you 20 things to do in May before the half term hits, celebrate a year of this newsletter, suggest 10 things for Under 5s, and mention a few happenings this weekend.

Apparently I saved the best for last - on the inset day before the new term started, me and Museum Girl visited the London Eye and Shrek’s Adventure! with CSSC. Both shot into her holiday top 3, alongside Zippos Circus - a real honour, considering how much other fun we had over Easter.

Museum Girl cooked the rainbow at Garden Museum, made mini-figures in a drop-off session at Sir John Soane’s Museum, and tore it up (quite literally as paper flew everywhere!) at Tate Modern’s Uniqlo Tate Play. MG and friend then giggled their way around the ‘instructional’ artworks in Yoko Ono at Tate - although some staff were less than pleased to see excited kids exploring the space a little too creatively.

Last weekend we stitched books with Japanese binding at the British Library’s family day, and rocked out at the final weekend of Medusa’s First Kiss at Little Angel Theatre.

On Universal Credit, or know someone who is? My latest blog post features 45+ fantastic offers for those on low-income benefits, all across the UK. And if you’re not, I’ve included other ways to save.

Let’s celebrate! This newsletter is 1 year old

Last April, I nervously pressed send on my first ever Museum Mum newsletter. Since then, I’ve sent 28 newsletters featuring over 1,050 events from 250+ venues. An astonishing 70% of the events I’ve shared have been completely free.

A big thank you to for inviting me into your inbox, mentioning me on or after your visits, and sending me lovely DMs about your days out. Thanks also to the organisations who’ve sponsored a newsletter: Art Fund, National Trust South East, Southbank Centre, and Westminster Abbey.

I hope you don’t mind me making an anniversary ask to help keep this newsletter going. I’ve spent at least 250 hours this year researching and writing the newsletters. I want to keep them free but, especially as the free subscriber limit looms, this needs to stand on its own two feet financially. Time consuming AND a loss maker is never a good combo, amirite?

Here’s how you can help me grow and bring in more income. None should take more than a few minutes, and most won’t cost you anything:

  • Share this newsletter with your fellow parents - forward to a friend or give me a shout out in your WhatsApp/Facebook groups.

  • Mention me when you share somewhere you’ve been - if you tag me @museummum on Instagram I can reshare.

  • Buy me a celebratory ko-fi, if you can (mine’s a decaf oat latte, cheers!)

  • Reply and answer me this - what would you be willing to pay me for?

  • If you know somewhere looking to reach more London parents, or support greater access to the culture sector, hit reply and let’s talk more!

Thanks again for all of your support, and here’s to another fun-packed year discovering London’s family gems!
